Final Fantasy XIV Trailer

Just viewed this new CGI trailer for Final Fantasy XIV, and have say, I’m pretty darn pumped. Although it releases next week for Windows (Collector’s Edition only), I’ll have to wait until March for the PS3 version.

River City Ransom Returns: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a game based on the comics of the same name, and to a lesser extent, the movie. However, all you really need to know about this game is if you have any fond memories of River City Ransom or any other classic side-scrolling beat-em-ups, you will probably fall in love with this game!

Epic Citadel: The Future Of Mobile Gaming Graphics?

If you managed to catch Apple’s keynote yesterday, you probably caught a glimpse of Epic’s upcoming title for iOS code named “Project Sword”. “Project Sword” is the first iOS game based on Unreal Engine 3, and is an action RPG focusing on 1 on 1 sword battles. Even though the game hasn’t been released yet, a tech demo is now available on the iTunes Store called Epic Citadel. It’s basically an app that allows you to wander around a medieval castle and enjoy the scenery. Below is a video clip, but it really doesn’t do it justice. If you have an iPhone 4 or 3GS, download it right now and be prepared to be blown away. It’s easily the best graphics I have ever seen on a mobile device. Assuming the gameplay is as good as the graphics, “Project Sword” could easily validate iOS as a viable mobile gaming platform to even the staunchest of critics.

Finally, Another 2d Worms on PC: Worms Reloaded

About damn time Team 17 released a 2d Worms game on PC! The last one came out almost 10 years ago! With that being said, it is unfortunate that this game is actually just a slightly enhanced remake of Worms 2: Armageddon which came out last year on X-Box Live Arcade.

XBox LIVE Gold Price Increase

Microsoft wouldn’t be Microsoft if it weren’t price gouging it’s customers. Beginning November 1st, XBox LIVE Gold memberships will increase to the following for US, Canada, and Mexico only:

  • 1 Month: $9.99 (up from $7.99)
  • 3 Months: $24.99 (up from $19.99)
  • 12 Months: $59.99 (up from $49,99)

You should still be able to find cheaper prices at sites like Amazon (time to stock up), but it seems like Microsoft is unaware of our current economic crisis. As much as people love video games, when it comes down to choosing to eat or play games, the choice is pretty clear for most. It remains to be seen how this price increase will affect the bottom line for Xbox LIVE, but as LIVE’s price goes up, PSN looks more and more attractive, even if it is considered inferior. I think I’ll be buying all my multiplayer titles on PS3 from here on out.

So, will you renew your Gold membership or “stick it to the man”?

UPDATE: Microsoft has a price lock renewal special on their website. You can renew an additional year for only $39.99 before the price hike. Unfortunately my Gold subscription lapses before Gears of War 3 hits shelves, so I might have no choice…

Bethesda Podcast

Today on Twitter, BethBlog announced their first ever pilot podcast. I’m most excited about this because it makes it easier to get info on current and upcoming Bethesda projects. Also, the pilot includes a sampling of the Fallout: New Vegas soundtrack, which I think is pretty important because Fallout 3′s soundtrack was a big part of it’s success. You can find the Podcast on the iTunes store (of course), or the link below. I plan on downloading it ASAP.

Dragon Age: Origins DLC Announced: Witch Hunt

The latest, and possibly last, Dragon Age: Origins DLC has been announced by BioWare. Entitled Witch Hunt, and purported to be the conclusion of the Dragon Age: Origins storyline, the Champion of Ferelden embarks on a journey to confront Morrigan and learn of the secrets she has been hiding. Players can either import their existing Grey Warden or create a new high level character. Witch Hunt will be a available on September 7th for 560 BioWare/MS points, or $6.99 on PSN.

Dungeon Defenders Coming to PSN

The Playstation Network seems to be the place for quality downloadable titles lately (Joe Danger, Pixel Junk Shooter 2, etc). Coming this winter is a game called Dungeon Defenders, and it looks to be a pretty interesting addition. Dubbed a “cooperative tower defense action role playing game”, up to 4 players (local or online) must choose a hero class and defend their ‘Eternia Crystals’ from wave after wave of enemies. In addition to setting up defenses, players join the battle directly and progress through an RPG style level up system to gain new stats and abilities. Check the gameplay video below:

No word on the release date or price just yet, but my guess would be end of November or December.

Mass Effect 2 DLC: Lair of the Shadowbroker

If you haven’t taken the Normandy out for a spin lately, September 7th will bring the next installment of Mass Effect 2 DLC titled Lair of the Shadowbroker. For 800 BioWare/MS points, you can assist Liara with tracking down the Shadow Broker’s secret lair. Apparently, Commander Sheppard also has the chance to give Liara a little taste of what she’s been missing. Also included is the Shadow Broker intel center, new research, and five more achievements. This could be the best ME2 DLC yet, and could potentially bridge the gap between ME2 and ME3.
