A surprising announcement today at QuakeCon by the graphics god himself, John Carmack, reveals that the graphics engine developed for their upcoming title Rage has been successfully ported to the iPhone. Many of the advanced texture and lighting features are retained from the console version, and it reportedly run at 60 frames per second on the latest iPhone. Even more surprising is that the engine is able to run on older iPhones as well without much of a performance hit. id has made it known that we can expect two iPhone games to be released based on Rage, one later this year for $10 and another to coincide with the console launch next year in 2011.
In his announcement, Carmack stated that the graphics for the iPhone version of Rage are superior to anything seen on the PS2 or Xbox, and are nearly comparable to the graphics capabilities of the current generation of consoles. With handheld sales plummeting and iPhone sales increasing, Sony and Nintendo may be facing an uphill battle as developers are able to unlock the power of Apple’s mobile platform.
